Winter X Games is officially over, and I’m almost positive I could hear a unanimous sigh of relief. It was a circus, to say the least, but in a good way. There was a lot going on this weekend, and SNOWBOARDER was on hand for everything snowboard. Today, the 8 men and 6 women who qualified for slopestyle finals took the stage as thousands of people turned out to show support for their favorite riders.
The women’s field included Hana Beaman, Jenny Jones, Jamie Anderson, Janna Meyen-Weatherby, Cheryl Maas and Kjersti Buass. While all of the ladies rode well, only three walked away with X Games hardware. Those lucky three were Jenny Jones who walked away with gold, Jamie Anderson who got silver and Janna Meyen-Weatherby who took home third. Jamie was in the lead for a while, but when Jenny Jones dropped one of the heaviest slopestyle wins in women’s snowboarding history, there was no denying that Jones was the number one babe of the day. I will say, however, that if Janna had landed her last hit Cab nine, these top three results may have been a little bit different. But I personally believe that Janna would’ve walked away with the win.
As for the men’s field, it was chock-full of some of today’s best jumpers and jibbers. Halldór Helgason, Tim Humphreys, Eero Ettala, Chas Guldemond, Eric Willett, Torstein Horgmo, Sage Kotsenburg and Mikkel Bang weren’t offered the natural light that the ladies were graced with, but that didn’t slow them down. However, it did prevent some from landing. That said, nobody could beat Eero Ettala’s first run of the day, light or no light. His three-jump combo of back ten, double backside rodeo and switch double backflip was absolutely incredible and with a score of 93.33, no one came close to overtaking his commanding lead and he went home with a well-deserved gold. Eero may very well be one of the best snowboarders to ever strap in to a snowboard, and he proved that to the thousands of spectators today. Rookie and all-around ripper Eric Willett made his X Games debut this weekend and competed in big air, and though he failed to qualify for last night’s final, he went home tonight with a slopestyle silver medal. Needless to say, the kid was stoked. Rounding out the podium was NH dirt and Rockstat team rider Chas Guldemond. Chas’s run put him on his first podium in X Games history.
