Mountain Goat: Travis Rice

Just in case you wandered into the pages of this magazine and have not heard of the Jackson Hole local that brought the world The Community Project, That's It That's All, The Art of Flight and The Fourth Phase, we would like to make this is easy as possible for you. Travis Rice is to snowboarding what Michael Jordan is to basketball. His contributions to our sport are unquantifiable, but we will try to list a fraction here.

Rice has accrued seventeen accolades from our Rider of the Year list, which is the highest number of any rider in history. Along with the ROTY awards, he has graced our covers and snagged two Superpark Standout awards--quite possibly the only rider to reach that SNOWBOARDER trifecta. Add in X Games golds and the top spot on the podium at nearly every event in nearly every discipline of snowboarding and it still isn't even scratching the surface of one snowboarding's greatest luminairies. From the quarterpipe of the Arctic Challenge to some of the gnarliest lines ever documented across the globe, Travis has grown from a dominant contest kid to one of the most respected big mountain shredders of all time.

Never compromising an ounce of style, it has always been on Rice's own terms. Maybe that is why he is so revered in our culture. Cementing himself early in his filming career with NBD footage from Chad's Gap in Absinthe's Pop, iconic parts with Brainfarm, and more have followed almost every season since. If all that wasn't enough to land him on our Mountain GOAT list, Rice has gone even further by mentoring the next round of potential greats around his home and in his latest projects. Whether his supernatural abilities were cultivated over time or bestowed upon him by the Wyoming water he grew up drinking, the facts are undeniable!
