Norway has produced some of the best snowboarders in the history of our sport and its legacy looks to be a lasting one with the one and only Torstein Horgmo. Few riders have the versatility of Torstein, as he’s able to blend backcountry, street and competitive snowboarding like nearly no one else in recent memory. And this year was no different. Coming off of a gnarly back injury, Torstein took a guns-blazing approach to filming his video part in Union’s new offering, Stronger, and the end result was in fact an ender that resonated with our voting pool to catapult him to number 3 in our Top Ten Riders of the Year.
Fellow countryman and Norwegian legend in his own right, Andreas Wiig, was quick to shower Torstein with his praises, stating, “Torstein started off the season with breaking his back and ended it with an unbelievable backside 10 on one of the biggest jumps I've ever seen. Impressed!” And if that isn’t impressive enough, Torstein also filmed for the new Shredbots flick where he had standout footage among a barrage of ludicrous riding. Simply, Torstein can do it all, and he shows no signs of slowing down in the near future. Eddie Wall backed up Andreas with this: “He hits some of the largest backcountry jumps of the year and then is like, “Oh yeah, I'm gonna head to the streets and show you that I can hit rails like a champ.' Very, very few riders can shred the backcountry and streets with power and ease like Torstien,” while Halldór Helgason, a man who knows what it takes to compete and film winter after winter, claimed, “Torstein straight up killed it the Union movie!” Few riders have progressed snowboarding like Torstein has in the last decade and a man that knws what pushing the limits looks like and costs, Lukas Huffman, rewarded Torstein for his years of dedication to all aspects of snowboarding by stating, “I love watching him ride. He's got the most pop and puts that to use on everything in his path, be it streets or massive kickers. His ender trick in Stronger was the first time in many years that I've replayed a video. It's unreal. That is what I love about watching good snowboarders ride; they show you progression that has never been seen before.”
Rounding out our top three, Torstein Horgmo got a well-deserved nod for one of the most impressive winters in recent memory and only time will tell what Torstein will bring to the table next. Congrats, T. You earned yet another Rider of the Year appearance, and we look forward to writing more of these recaps for you in the coming years.”
